Post Op Instructions:

  • Avoid eating until numbness has worn off.
  • Soreness and moderate discomfort is expected and can increase for about a week after surgery.
  • Swelling and facial bruising are to be expected. To minimize the swelling apply ice packs outside of the face over the area of surgery for 15-20 min every hour beginning the day of the surgery for the first 24 hours. Apply warm compresses the day after surgery for 20 minutes throughout the day. 
  • Traces of blood will be found in saliva for the next 24 hours. Do not rinse vigorously for the first two days. If heavy bleeding occurs, apply direct pressure to the area using moist gauze or a moistened, standard tea bag for at least 45 minutes. If continuous bleeding occurs please contact the office immediately or proceed to the emergency room.
  • No smoking, spitting or using a straw for 72 hours.
  • Tooth sensitivity following surgery is very normal. It is usually related to the surgical procedure but can also be due to plaque accumulation. Plaque control procedures is very important!
  • Oral hygiene is important. Gentle brushing but area of surgery should be avoided for 7 – 10 days. Gentle rinsing with warm salt water to keep the area clean. DO NOT USE A WATER PIK, SONICARE OR OTHER ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH IN THE SURGICAL AREA FOR 14 DAYS.
  • Take medication as prescribed.
