Crown Lengthening

Have you ever seen someone with purple/ gray discoloration at the gum line? Sometimes when a crown is placed in close proximity to the bone due to extended decay, a localized infection appears. Or in some situations decay may extend below the gumline. Crown lengthening is a routine surgical procedure, which remodels the contour of the gum line. The procedure does not actually lengthen the crown, but rather lowers the gum line. When there is not enough tooth structure to affix a crown, this is the only option. Crown lengthening is a successful procedure in exposing more of the tooth, so that the dentist has something to work with. This procedure is usually determined following the removal of decay or completion of a root canal. This procedure adjusts the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth so it can be restored.

Sometimes crown lengthening is done to improve a "gummy" smile because the teeth appear short. The teeth may actually be the proper length but excess gum tissue may be covering these teeth. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth
