Post Op Instructions:

  • Avoid eating until numbness has worn off.
  • Avoid eating in the area of the extraction for the next 72 hours.
  • Bite on the gauze given to you and apply firm pressure for the next hour following the extraction, replacing every 10-15 minutes to control bleeding.  You may also apply pressure with a tea bag to the area to control the bleeding.
  • Traces of blood will be found in saliva for the next 24 hours. Do not rinse vigorously for the first two days. If heavy bleeding occurs, apply direct pressure to the area using moist gauze or a moistened, standard tea bag for at least 45 minutes. If continuous bleeding occurs please contact the office immediately or proceed to the emergency room.
  • Do not drink from a straw, spit, or smoke for the next 72 hours to avoid a dry socket.
  • Avoid brushing the day of the surgery. The following day you may brush your teeth but avoid the surgical area.
  • You may gently rinse with warm salt water the next day following your extraction to minimize any post op discomfort.
  • Be careful with the foods you choose to eat. Avoid hard, fiberous or chewy foods in the extraction site.
  • Swelling is common. To minimize swelling place an ice pack on the extraction site side of the cheek with the extraction site. Place within the first 24 hours for maximum effect. Place on the site 15 min on 15 min off.
  • If severe pain occurs 3 days after the extraction, you most probably have a dry socket, which is exposed bone at the extraction site. Please contact our office immediately for an appointment.
  • Take medication as prescribed.
